Hi, I’m Tone (徐小彤), a cognitive scientist and an HCI researcher 👩🏻‍💻.

My research examines, augments, and challenges cognitive offloading in AI-assisted workflows through design and experiments. I’m fascinated by how readily people adapt, learn, and grow with new technology. This inspires me to work toward human-AI collaboration that improves productivity while deepening human expertise.

I’m currently a postdoctoral fellow at DGP Group, U of Toronto CS, advised by Dr. Fanny Chevalier and Dr. Marsha Chechik, supported by Vanguard, where I investigate cognitive and responsible AI 🧠 in high-stakes domains like finance. Previously, I earned my Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from UC San Diego, working with Dr. Steven Dow in the ProtoLab and the Design Lab.

As a researcher, I use mixed methods grounded in psychology, learning science, and human-centered design. My work shows that the right design choices can keep people thinking critically when working with AI. As a designer and builder, I create interactive prototypes and AI agents, deploying them as technology probes to test what helps people genuinely learn. (📢 research aside, check out my vibe coded guide to Toronto and San Diego eateries.)

I received my B.S. degree in Psychology from University of Wisconsin-Madison with Honors in the Liberal Arts and did a Master program in Information Science at Cornell University.
